English as a Second Language (ESL) Program for Academic Success

The ESL Program at Nova High School is a specialized academic pathway created to support international learners and students whose primary language of instruction is not English. Our goal is to equip students with the language, cultural understanding, and academic skills needed to succeed in the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) program and transition confidently into university studies.

Recognizing that strong language proficiency is the foundation of academic achievement, the program follows a structured, comprehensive progression fully aligned with Ontario Ministry of Education standards. Nova High School’s ESL curriculum is delivered across five clearly defined levels, reflecting the Ministry’s official ESL framework and ensuring consistent, measurable development at each stage.

These accredited ESL courses form a key part of the Nova High School curriculum and count toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The program extends far beyond basic language learning, helping students build strong academic English skills essential for high school and university success. Students develop:

  • Advanced reading skills to analyze academic texts
  • Academic writing abilities, including essays, research papers, and reports
  • Effective listening and speaking skills for discussions and presentations

Our experienced ESL faculty provide structured support to ensure a smooth transition into mainstream English courses, including the required Grade 12 University-level English (ENG4U). International students also benefit from access to our multilingual staff, who offer additional guidance as they adjust to life in Toronto.
