As part of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), students at Nova High School Canada are required to complete 40 hours of community involvement. This requirement encourages students to develop civic responsibility, leadership skills, and practical experience while contributing to their local and broader communities.
Volunteering
The 40-Hour Community Involvement Requirement
Our Guidance team supports students in finding meaningful volunteer opportunities that align with their academic and career interests. Active participation in community initiatives is also a valuable asset for university and college applications, highlighting students’ initiative, empathy, and leadership outside the classroom.

Recommended opportunities include:
- Peer Tutoring and Mentorship: Supporting classmates through tutoring or school mentorship programs.
- Local Community Service: Volunteering at food banks, community centres, environmental programs, or local charities.
- School-Based Activities: Assisting with school events, administrative tasks, or extracurricular programs.
Students are required to document and submit their 40 hours to school administration before graduation to meet the OSSD criteria. Through this community engagement, Nova High School Canada ensures students gain practical experience, leadership skills, and a sense of social responsibility that prepares them for post-secondary education and life beyond school.
